Monroe Fire Protection District Merger

As of December 31, 2020, the Northern Monroe Fire Protection Territory will no longer exist. The Bloomington Township Fire Department will merge with the Monroe Fire Protection District as of January 1, 2021. The decision to join the District was spearheaded by the administrative staff of the Township; however, the residents of the unincorporated area of the Township voted unanimously to go forward. This was done by a referendum via a mailing to residents. Three public meetings were held where residents could ask questions and comment on the potential merger. Once the residents approved the merger, the County Commissioners were able to expand the fire district.

The main reason for the merger was to provide for increased efficiency in services. Coming together under one umbrella will eliminate jurisdictional boundaries, which could help with response times as closer fire stations can be mobilized more quickly. Residents will see no change in the current service they receive. Our firefighters and emergency service providers will continue to serve the community with the same compassionate and excellent service that residents have come to expect.
